Why I’m Part of the Alliance: Mindy Nuhring
“I believe a vibrant downtown is essential to the success of our entire community.”
As the Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, I chose to serve on the board of the newly established Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance because I believe a vibrant downtown is essential to the success of our entire community.
The Community Foundation is located in the heart of downtown, and every day we see the impact that a strong business district, welcoming public spaces, and community gathering places have on residents, visitors, and local organizations. Downtown is often the front door to a community, shaping first impressions and creating opportunities for connection, commerce, and civic engagement.
My commitment to the Alliance is also personal. As someone who is from Grand Rapids, I care deeply about the future of our community and want to help ensure that it remains a place where people (including my own children) want to live, work, raise families, and build businesses. Having grown up here, I've seen firsthand how our community has evolved over the years, and I believe we have a unique opportunity to build on our strengths while preserving what makes Grand Rapids special. Being part of the Downtown Alliance allows me to contribute to that vision and invest in the place that has shaped so much of who I am.
From the Foundation's perspective, a thriving downtown benefits far more than just the businesses and organizations located there. A healthy downtown contributes to the economic vitality, community pride, and quality of life of the entire region. When downtown businesses succeed, events attract visitors, and public spaces are active and welcoming, the positive effects ripple outward to surrounding neighborhoods, local employers, nonprofits, and residents throughout the area.
Strong communities need strong gathering places, and downtown Grand Rapids serves as one of those important anchors.
I am excited about the role the Alliance can play in bringing people together around a shared vision for our community's future. By fostering collaboration among businesses, property owners, nonprofits, local government, and community members, the Alliance can help strengthen downtown while creating opportunities that benefit the broader community. Serving on the board is an opportunity to combine my professional commitment to community philanthropy with my personal commitment to the place I've always called home.
