The Spark ProjectA Community Painted Mural at Old Central School
A rendering of the mural on the south lawn of Old Central School. (artist: Erick Toussaint)
We’re incredibly excited to announce our Spark Project - the first of many visual initiatives for Downtown Grand Rapids. The project will consist of adding a new interactive mural on the south lawn of Old Central School.
The design will mainly feature loon wings with an opening in the center, setting the stage for visitors to place themselves in the mural for a photo opportunity. The mural also includes various nods to the area, with references to our logging history, the Ruby Slippers, local nature and wildlife, and much more. To assist with photos, a selfie station will be available for people to place their device and snap a picture while they stand in front of the mural.
The Alliance is working with artist Erick Toussaint on the design, but is asking for the community’s assistance in helping complete the project. The mural will be partially filled in by Toussaint, but will require the community’s participation to fill in the rest during a community painting event to be announced soon.
In addition, we’re also asking for the community to support the completion of the mural with a donation. All donors will be recognized on our website once the project is complete.
Future plans for the lawn are to also add a walkway from the existing sidewalk and other accessibility options.
Please support this project and help us bring it to life!
